Overview

The HashiCorp Associate certifications at a glance

HashiCorp builds the tools that run a lot of modern cloud infrastructure — Terraform for provisioning, Vault for secrets, Consul for service networking — and offers an Associate-level certification for each. They are independent credentials, not stages of one path: you pick the tool that matches your work rather than collecting them in order.

The exams share a format. Every HashiCorp Associate certification is multiple choice, about an hour long, online-proctored, has no prerequisites, and is valid for two years. They test conceptual understanding and workflow knowledge rather than live terminal tasks — which makes them a near-perfect fit for spaced repetition, since success hinges on recalling commands, behaviors and trade-offs accurately.

For most people the answer is to start with Terraform: it is the most popular and most-hired-for of the three, and Infrastructure as Code is the foundation the others build on. Below you will find each certification broken down, a side-by-side comparison, and a simple decision guide. Gnoseed does not sell or proctor these exams — it is a free study companion.

Breakdown

The certifications, one by one

Each credential maps to a different HashiCorp tool. Here is what each one tests, who it is for, and the Gnoseed decks that map to it.

Terraform

HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (003)

Associate · entry-levelMultiple choice · ~1hPrereq: None

The Terraform Associate is the flagship and by far the most-searched HashiCorp certification. The current <strong>003</strong> exam tests Infrastructure as Code concepts, the core <strong>plan / apply workflow</strong>, providers and the Registry, state management, modules and HCL configuration. It is the natural starting point for anyone in DevOps, platform or cloud engineering — and the only one of the three with dedicated Gnoseed decks.

Choose this if…

  • You provision or want to provision cloud infrastructure
  • You work in DevOps, platform or cloud engineering
  • You want the most in-demand, most-recognized HashiCorp credential
Vault

HashiCorp Certified: Vault Associate (002)

Associate · entry-levelMultiple choice · ~1hPrereq: None

The Vault Associate covers secrets management — dynamic secrets, encryption as a service, authentication methods, policies and the Vault workflow. It is the credential to reach for when your focus is security and protecting sensitive data rather than provisioning infrastructure. Gnoseed does not yet have a Vault deck, so pair this one with HashiCorp's own study guide.

Choose this if…

  • Secrets management and data protection are core to your role
  • You work closely with security or compliance teams
  • You already use or plan to deploy Vault in production
Consul

HashiCorp Certified: Consul Associate (002)

Associate · entry-levelMultiple choice · ~1hPrereq: None

The Consul Associate covers service discovery, health checking, service mesh, secure service-to-service communication and Consul's networking model. It targets platform and networking engineers connecting services across dynamic infrastructure. Like Vault, it does not yet have a dedicated Gnoseed deck, so lean on HashiCorp's official exam objectives to prepare.

Choose this if…

  • Service discovery and service mesh are part of your work
  • You operate microservices across dynamic infrastructure
  • You already use or plan to deploy Consul

Logistics

Cost, validity and where to register

All HashiCorp Associate exams are booked through HashiCorp's certification portal, taken online with a proctor, and are valid for two years. They are multiple choice, roughly an hour long, and have no prerequisites — you can take them in any order.

HashiCorp updates exam versions periodically (the current Terraform exam is 003), and pricing can change, so confirm the current fee, exam version and policies on the official certification site before you register. Gnoseed is free and does not sell exams or vouchers; for the current details, go straight to HashiCorp.

FAQ

Common questions

Which HashiCorp certification should I get first? +

For most people, the Terraform Associate. It is the most in-demand and most-searched HashiCorp credential, and Infrastructure as Code is the foundation that the Vault and Consul tracks build on. Start there unless your role is specifically secrets (Vault) or service networking (Consul).

Is there a Terraform Professional or Advanced certification? +

The Terraform Associate (003) is the established, generally available Terraform certification. HashiCorp has explored higher-level credentials over time, so check the official certification site for the current lineup before planning beyond the Associate.

Do the HashiCorp exams have prerequisites? +

No. The Terraform, Vault and Consul Associate exams are all independent and have no prerequisites — you can take them in any order, and each is valid for two years.

Are the exams hands-on or multiple choice? +

They are multiple choice, about an hour long and online-proctored — they test concepts and workflow knowledge rather than live terminal tasks. That makes spaced repetition especially effective for recalling commands, behaviors and trade-offs.

How does Gnoseed help me prepare? +

Gnoseed turns the concepts the Terraform Associate tests into spaced-repetition flashcards so they stick in long-term memory. The Vault and Consul Associate exams do not yet have dedicated decks — pair those with HashiCorp's official study guides.
