Certifications guide

Which Kubernetes Certification Should You Choose?

Four official Kubernetes certifications, one decision. This guide compares CKA, CKAD, CKS and KCNA — what each tests, who it is for, and which to start with — so you can pick the right one and prepare with confidence.

Overview

The four Kubernetes certifications at a glance

Kubernetes certifications are run by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) together with The Linux Foundation. There are four core credentials, and they are not a single ladder — they target different roles. Picking the right one starts with knowing whether you operate clusters, build apps on them, secure them, or are just getting started.

Three of the four — CKA, CKAD and CKS — are hands-on, performance-based exams: you solve real tasks in a live terminal, not multiple-choice questions. KCNA is the exception, a multiple-choice entry-level exam. That format difference matters: the performance-based exams reward muscle memory and fast recall of commands and concepts — exactly what spaced repetition is good at building.

Below you will find each certification broken down, a side-by-side comparison, and a simple decision guide. Gnoseed does not sell or proctor these exams — it is a free study companion that helps the concepts stick while you prepare.

Breakdown

The certifications, one by one

Each credential targets a different role. Here is what each one tests, who it is for, and the Gnoseed decks that map to it.

KCNA

Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate

Associate · entry-levelMultiple choice · ~90 minPrereq: None

KCNA is the on-ramp. It tests a broad, conceptual understanding of Kubernetes and the wider cloud-native ecosystem — container orchestration, architecture, observability and application delivery — without requiring you to operate a cluster hands-on. It is the only one of the four that is multiple choice.

Choose this if…

  • You are new to Kubernetes and cloud native
  • You want a recognized credential before a hands-on exam
  • Your role is adjacent (PM, sales engineer, junior dev) and you need solid fundamentals
CKA

Certified Kubernetes Administrator

ProfessionalPerformance-based · ~2hPrereq: None (fundamentals recommended)

The CKA is the flagship and the most-searched Kubernetes certification. It proves you can install, configure and operate a cluster and — crucially — troubleshoot it under time pressure. Troubleshooting is the single largest exam domain, so scenario practice pays off more here than anywhere else.

Choose this if…

  • You run or want to run Kubernetes clusters
  • Your job is operations, SRE or platform engineering
  • You want the highest-demand, most recognized K8s credential
CKAD

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer

ProfessionalPerformance-based · ~2hPrereq: None (container & app basics recommended)

The CKAD is the developer-facing counterpart to the CKA. Instead of running the cluster, you focus on defining, deploying and configuring applications — Pods, Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, probes and resource limits. It overlaps with the CKA on workloads and configuration but skips cluster administration.

Choose this if…

  • You write and deploy applications, not operate clusters
  • You work with manifests, Helm charts and CI/CD daily
  • You want a hands-on credential focused on app delivery
CKS

Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist

Specialist · advancedPerformance-based · ~2hPrereq: Active CKA required

The CKS is the advanced security specialization — and the only one with a hard prerequisite: you must hold an active CKA before you can take it. It covers cluster hardening, RBAC, secrets, network policies, supply-chain security and runtime threat detection. Earn the CKA first, then specialize.

Choose this if…

  • You already hold (or are earning) the CKA
  • Security and hardening are part of your role
  • You want to stand out with an advanced specialization

Logistics

Cost, validity and where to register

All four exams are purchased and booked through The Linux Foundation training portal, and each certification is valid for two years. The performance-based exams (CKA, CKAD, CKS) typically include one free retake.

Prices change regularly and the Linux Foundation runs frequent bundles and discounts — often pairing an exam with its prep course — so check the official pricing before you buy rather than trusting a number you read elsewhere. Gnoseed is free and does not sell exams or vouchers; for the current fee, registration and exam policies, go straight to the CNCF / Linux Foundation site.

FAQ

Common questions

Which Kubernetes certification is most in demand? +

The CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) is consistently the most-searched and most-recognized Kubernetes certification, which makes it a strong default for anyone working in operations, SRE or platform engineering.

Do I need the CKA before the CKAD? +

No. The CKA and CKAD are independent, parallel certifications — you can take either first. Only the CKS has a prerequisite: it requires an active CKA.

Are the exams multiple choice? +

Only KCNA is multiple choice. CKA, CKAD and CKS are performance-based: you solve real tasks in a live terminal, which rewards hands-on practice and fast recall.

What is a Kubestronaut? +

Kubestronaut is a CNCF recognition for earning all five Kubernetes certifications — KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS. It is an aspirational milestone for cert collectors and power users, not a separate exam.

How does Gnoseed help me prepare? +

Gnoseed is a free study companion, not a course or exam dump. It turns the concepts each exam tests into spaced-repetition flashcards so they stick in long-term memory — pair it with hands-on practice in a real cluster.
