The same job title, two opposite exams

LFCS from The Linux Foundation and LPIC-1 from the Linux Professional Institute both say the same thing on a CV: this person can administer a Linux system. They prove it in opposite ways. LFCS is a single two-hour sitting of 17–20 performance-based tasks that you solve on a real system, and you need 67 % to pass. LPIC-1 is two separate written exams — 101-500 and 102-500 — each 60 multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions in 90 minutes, each scored from 200 to 800 with 500 to pass.

The fact that reframes the choice is not "hands-on versus theory", which every comparison says. It is what you may open during the exam. In the LFCS you have a terminal and nothing else: man pages and the documentation the distribution ships in /usr/share. No browser tab, no search engine, no upstream docs site — which is worth knowing if you have heard that the Kubernetes exams let you keep kubernetes.io open, because this one does not work that way. LPIC-1 is closed-book too, but it asks you to recognise an answer rather than produce one, and its fill-in-the-blank items want the flag spelled correctly with no shell to check against.

The whole exam is work. You are dropped into a remote environment, ssh into the hosts and containers you are given, and complete 17–20 tasks in two hours — roughly six to seven minutes each. The current domains are Operations Deployment (25 %), Networking (25 %), Storage (20 %), Essential Commands (20 %) and Users and Groups (10 %), so half the exam is deployment and networking rather than the fundamentals people usually drill. It is proctored remotely, and an enrolment includes a second attempt, which changes the risk calculation on booking it early.

LPIC-1 is earned by passing both 101-500 and 102-500, in either order and at separate sittings. Exam 101 covers system architecture, installation and package management, GNU and Unix commands, and filesystems; exam 102 covers shells and scripting, interfaces and desktops, administrative tasks, essential system services, networking fundamentals and security. The breadth is the point — it is the widest syllabus of the entry-level Linux credentials, and it is the entry rung of a ladder that continues to LPIC-2 and LPIC-3.

What you are allowed to open

This is the difference most comparisons skip, and it decides how you should prepare. In the LFCS you get the terminal and what the distribution ships: man pages and the documentation under /usr/share. There is no permitted browser tab to upstream documentation. If your mental model of a performance-based exam comes from the Kubernetes exams, where a tab to the official docs is allowed, adjust it — here the reference material is whatever is installed on the machine in front of you.

That has a practical consequence: man is your only lookup, and reading a man page costs minutes you do not have across 17–20 tasks. Knowing that man 5 fstab exists is worth more than knowing every field in it, because you can find the field in seconds if you know which page to open. Preparation that builds instant recall of which tool and which page beats preparation that memorises every flag.

LPIC-1 is closed-book in a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctored session. Its fill-in-the-blank items are the sting: you type the command or the path with no shell to correct you, so an approximate memory of an option is worth nothing. Both exams therefore reward exact recall — one because you must produce a working command, the other because you must produce the right characters.

Structure

Two exams versus one sitting

LPIC-1 requires passing both 101-500 and 102-500, booked and paid for separately. That splits the effort, lets you bank progress and keeps a single bad day from costing you the whole credential — but it is two exam fees, two bookings and two rounds of nerves, and you hold no certification until the second one is passed.

The LFCS is one two-hour block, all or nothing on the day, but an enrolment includes a second attempt. That is worth reading twice: the retake being in the price makes booking an early attempt a reasonable strategy rather than a gamble, because a failed first sitting is a detailed map of what to study, not a lost fee.

LPI applies its own retake rules if you fail: a week before your first retake, then 30 days before any subsequent attempt on the same exam. So a bad LPIC-1 sitting costs a week at minimum and a month if it happens twice — plan a booking date with that spacing in mind rather than assuming you can resit immediately.

The long view

A five-year credential and a two-year one

LPIC-1 stays active for five years. LFCS is valid for two. Over a six-year stretch of a career that is one renewal event against roughly three — a difference in ongoing time and money that no side-by-side table of exam formats will show you.

It is not automatically an argument for LPIC-1. A two-year cycle keeps a performance credential honest, which is arguably the point of certifying hands-on skill at all; a five-year-old multiple-choice pass says less about what you can do today. But if the credential is going on a CV to clear a filter rather than to prove current skill, the renewal cadence is a real cost worth pricing before you choose.

Cost, booking and renewal

The Linux Foundation lists the LFCS at $445 at the time of writing, with bundles that pair the exam with a subscription or the LFS207 course at a higher price; the enrolment includes two attempts. LPI prices its exams per country, so there is no single figure to quote — check LPI pricing for your region, and remember you are buying two exams, not one.

Both bodies run promotions and change fees without much notice, and exam objectives are revised on their own schedule. Confirm the current price, exam version and policies with the Linux Foundation and LPI directly before you book — not from a comparison page, including this one. Can I use Google or the internet during the LFCS exam? +
