The furthest apart of the entry-level pair

LFCS from The Linux Foundation and CompTIA Linux+ are the two entry-level Linux certifications with the least in common. LFCS is entirely performance-based: 17–20 tasks solved on a live system in two hours, 67 % to pass, with only man pages and the distribution's own documentation for reference. Linux+ — currently XK0-006, launched 15 July 2025 — is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, mostly multiple choice with performance-based items mixed in, scored 720 of 900.

That gap makes the comparison unusually clean, because the two are not really competing for the same buyer. One produces evidence that you can operate a system. The other produces a credential that hiring systems in the United States recognise on sight. Both are legitimate purchases; they are just not the same purchase.

What complicates it is that both blueprints now talk about automation and deployment — LFCS gives Operations Deployment its largest share at 25 %, and XK0-006 gives Automation, Orchestration and Scripting 17 %. The domains are Operations Deployment (25 %), Networking (25 %), Storage (20 %), Essential Commands (20 %) and Users and Groups (10 %). Your only reference is what the machine ships — man pages and /usr/share — so there is no researching your way through a task you have never done. An enrolment includes two attempts, and the certification is valid for two years.

XK0-006 replaced XK0-005, which retired for English on 13 January 2026. It runs up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple choice with performance-based items, across System Management (23 %), Troubleshooting (22 %), Services and User Management (20 %), Security (18 %) and Automation, Orchestration and Scripting (17 %). CompTIA recommends roughly twelve months of hands-on Linux beforehand. The credential lasts three years and renews through continuing education.

The honest split is between proving skill and signalling it. Decide which you need.

    Take the LFCS. It certifies what you do rather than what you can describe, and the preparation is command fluency at speed — which pays off on the job whether or not you pass first time.

The overlap that is not one

Both say automation. Only one makes you type it.

Read the two blueprints and you would think they converge. LFCS puts Operations Deployment at 25 %, its joint-largest domain, covering things like configuring kernel parameters, working with Git and running containerised workloads. XK0-006 has Automation, Orchestration and Scripting at 17 %. Same vocabulary, and it is easy to read that as the same content.

The measurement is different in kind. On the LFCS the automation domain means a task that must work when the proctor's script checks the system afterwards — a service that comes up, a volume that mounts, a repository in the state described. On Linux+ it means recognising the right approach among options, with some interactive items in the test engine. One asks whether you can produce a working outcome; the other asks whether you know which outcome is correct.

That is not a knock on either. Recognising the right answer is a real skill and it is what most of the working day consists of. But if you are choosing between the two on the theory that the syllabus overlap makes them interchangeable, it does not — you would be preparing for two genuinely different tests.

Exam mechanics

Two hours on a real machine versus 90 minutes in a test engine

LFCS gives you roughly six to seven minutes per task across 17–20 tasks, on a remote environment you ssh into, proctored over audio, video and screen share. There is no partial credit for describing what you would do. There is also no browser: your reference material is man pages and whatever the distribution installed under /usr/share.

Linux+ gives you 90 minutes for up to 90 questions, so on average under a minute each, with performance-based items taking longer and multiple-choice items much less. The pressure is pace across breadth rather than depth on a few problems, and the pass mark is 720 on a 100–900 scale.

Practically, that means different failure modes. You fail LFCS by being slow — knowing the answer but taking eleven minutes to produce it. You fail Linux+ by having gaps — one domain you skipped, spread across a fifth of the questions. Prepare accordingly: speed drills for one, coverage for the other.

After you pass

Two years versus three, and what upkeep costs

LFCS is valid for two years — the shortest cycle of the entry-level Linux credentials, which is consistent with certifying current hands-on ability rather than knowledge acquired once.

CompTIA certifications expire three years from the date you certify, kept alive through continuing education: units earned during the cycle plus the CE fee, with a 30-day grace period, or a retake of the current exam version. It is a longer window than the LFCS but not a passive one.

Neither is a five-year-and-forget credential like LPIC-1. If minimal upkeep is what you are optimising for, that comparison is on the LPIC-1 page — but be clear with yourself that you are then optimising for the paperwork rather than for the skill.

Cost, validity and where to register

The Linux Foundation lists the LFCS at $445 at the time of writing, with higher-priced bundles that add a subscription or the LFS207 course; two exam attempts are included. CompTIA sells Linux+ vouchers through its marketplace and Pearson VUE — the published price for the previous XK0-005 exam was $369 in the United States, but we could not confirm the current XK0-006 voucher price at the source, so check CompTIA directly before budgeting.

Factor in the renewal: two years for LFCS, three for Linux+ with continuing-education units and the CE fee. Prices, exam versions and policies change without much notice at both bodies — confirm at training.linuxfoundation.org and comptia.org rather than trusting a figure on a comparison page, including this one. Is LFCS or CompTIA Linux+ better? +

They serve different purposes. LFCS proves you can operate a Linux system, because the whole exam is tasks on a live machine. Linux+ is more widely recognised by US enterprise and government hiring teams and covers more breadth in a single 90-minute exam. Pick by whether you need evidence of skill or recognition on a CV.

Is CompTIA Linux+ hands-on? +

Partly. XK0-006 mixes performance-based items into an exam of up to 90 mostly multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. LFCS is 100 % performance-based — 17–20 tasks solved on a real system over two hours, with nothing else on the exam.

What score do I need to pass each one? +

LFCS requires 67 % across its 17–20 tasks. CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006 requires 720 on a scale of 100 to 900.

Which is better for a DevOps or SRE role? +

LFCS is the closer match — deployment and networking are its two largest domains at 25 % each, and it tests you by making you do the work. That said, most DevOps job posts name neither certification and simply expect Linux fluency.

Do I need experience before taking either? +

Neither has a formal prerequisite. CompTIA recommends around twelve months of hands-on Linux experience for Linux+. LFCS states no prerequisite, but its format makes prior hands-on experience effectively necessary — there is no way to reason your way through a task you have never performed.
