KCNA vs CKA: Should You Take the Associate Exam First?

The usual advice is that the KCNA is the easy warm-up and the CKA is the real exam. The published numbers say something more awkward: the associate exam has the higher pass mark and the stricter conditions. Here is what each one is really asking of you, and why the KCNA is no longer a step you throw away.

The entry-level exam with the higher bar

KCNA — the Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate — is a 90-minute multiple-choice exam. CKA — the Certified Kubernetes Administrator — is a two-hour performance-based exam in a live environment. That much everyone knows, and it is where most comparisons stop, having established that one is easier than the other.

The numbers underneath complicate it. A multiple-choice Linux Foundation exam requires 75 % to pass; the CKA requires 66 %. And the KCNA is closed-book — candidates are not permitted to access tools, resources or external sites during a multiple-choice exam — while the CKA lets you keep the Kubernetes documentation, the Kubernetes blog and the Helm docs open the whole time. The associate exam asks for a higher score with nothing to lean on. It is easier in content depth, not in margin for error.

The second thing worth knowing before you decide is what happens to the KCNA afterwards, because the old argument for skipping it — a two-year credential you will outgrow in six months — stopped being true in 2026. Despite the cloud-native name, the KCNA is mostly a Kubernetes exam: Kubernetes Fundamentals alone is 44 % of it, followed by Container Orchestration at 28 %, Cloud Native Application Delivery at 16 % and Cloud Native Architecture at 12 %. That weighting is worth internalising before you build a study plan around the ecosystem — nearly three quarters of the exam is Kubernetes and orchestration, and the wider landscape is the smaller half of what remains. It is proctored online and closed-book: no documentation, no tabs, nothing open.

The CKA never asks you to recall a definition. It puts you in a live environment and scores the state you leave behind. Troubleshooting is its largest domain at 30 %, then Cluster Architecture, Installation and Configuration at 25 %, Services and Networking at 20 %, Workloads and Scheduling at 15 % and Storage at 10 %. It has no prerequisite, so the KCNA is genuinely optional rather than a gate — and it is the exam the CKS later requires you to hold.

Which should you book?

The honest answer depends on whether you have a cluster to practise on.

    Start with the KCNA. Not because the CKA is out of reach, but because the CKA is unpreparable without hands-on time, and the KCNA gives you a structured map of the terrain while you get that time.

    The KCNA is the faster route: 90 minutes, a lower fee, and no live-environment risk. Take it as a deliberate first credential rather than as a rehearsal for the CKA, because the two are prepared for in completely different ways.

Closed book at 75 %, open docs at 66 %

This is the inversion that catches people out. On a Linux Foundation multiple-choice exam, candidates are not permitted to access tools, resources or external sites — the KCNA is closed-book in the strictest sense. On the CKA you may keep the Kubernetes documentation, the Kubernetes blog and the Helm documentation open for the full two hours, with the caveat that you may search the docs site but must not open external search results.

Combine that with the pass marks — 75 % for the multiple-choice exam, 66 % for the CKA — and the shape of each risk becomes clear. On the KCNA you can afford to miss roughly a quarter of the paper, with no way to check anything. On the CKA you can afford to lose a third of the marks while holding the manual. The associate exam gives you a thinner margin and no safety net; the professional exam gives you a wider margin and the docs, and then spends 30 % of itself on problems the docs cannot solve for you.

The practical consequence for study: the KCNA rewards recall, because recall is all you have in the room. The CKA rewards fluency — knowing where a thing lives and being fast enough to get there — because the reference material is right in front of you and the constraint is the clock.

Renewal

The rule that stops the KCNA being a wasted step

The strongest argument against the KCNA used to be economic: it is valid for two years, you will have outgrown it long before then, and you will end up paying to renew a credential that no longer describes you. The Linux Foundation CARE program removed that argument. Passing the CKA — or the CKAD — automatically renews an active KCNA, for certifications earned or recertified on or after 1 January 2026.

So the sequence KCNA then CKA now costs one renewal event rather than two. Your KCNA expiry moves out when you pass the CKA, without a second exam fee or a second sitting, and the chain continues upward: since June 2026, passing or recertifying the CKS reinstates or extends the CKA. Allow a few days after passing for the automatic renewals to process.

That does not turn the KCNA into a required step. It removes the reason to avoid it if it was otherwise the right first exam for you. If you already run clusters, the CKA on its own is still the cheaper and more honest credential.

What the two-exam route actually costs

At the time of writing the Linux Foundation lists the KCNA at $250 and the CKA at $445 for the exam alone, each including one retake and a twelve-month scheduling window. Both are also sold in bundles — with the matching course, with a subscription, and as a KCNA + CKA pairing — usually below the sum of the two individual fees.

Taking both is therefore not a $695 decision if you buy them together, and under CARE it is not a doubled renewal either. Whether it is worth it at all depends on the honest answer to one question: does a hiring manager in your market ask for the KCNA? In most job posts the CKA is the one named. The KCNA earns its place as scaffolding for someone who needs the structure, not as a line on a CV that already has the CKA on it.

Booking, retakes and confirming the numbers

Both exams are bought and booked through the Linux Foundation training portal, both are proctored online, both include one retake, and both are valid for two years. Results arrive by email within roughly 24 hours. Neither has a prerequisite, so nothing stops you booking the CKA first.

Fees, curriculum versions and exam policies change on the Linux Foundation's own schedule, and it runs frequent promotions and bundles. Do I need KCNA before CKA? +

No. The CKA has no prerequisites, so you can book it as your first Kubernetes exam. The KCNA is optional scaffolding, useful mainly if you have not yet spent time on a real cluster.
